David Doherty
David Doherty

David Doherty was the youngest ever player to make his debut in the Premiership when he emerged from the Leeds Academy ranks in 2004. Since then he has had spells at London Wasps, Sale, Jersey and Cornish Pirates but in 2012 came home to Leeds on a two year contract.

It proved to be a great re-signing for the club with the winger in tremendous form, finishing the season as the club’s top try scorer with 13, earning a place in the RFU Championship Dream team and being named the Supporters Player of the Year.

Doherty rose through the ranks at Headingley as a dual code player. In union, his debut also made him the youngest ever player to play for the club and he was also part of the U19 squad which won the National Colts Cup less than 24 hours after his debut alongside the likes Danny Care and Jordan Crane.

It was a whirlwind year for the Leeds born winger who captained England U18 Clubs and was then elevated up to England U19, despite being two years younger than some of his team mates. He originally began his union career with West Leeds.

In 2005 David was selected for the England side for the U19 Six Nations tournament and opened his try scoring account against Wales in the first game of the tournament.

David originally signed for Leeds from Drighlington ARLFC and was part of the England U18 Academy squad which toured New Zealand and Australia in July and August 2004.

David’s debut for Leeds was as a replacement for Dan Scarbrough against Northampton at Headingley in the 65th minute, which made him the youngest ever player to play in the Premiership at just 17 years and 95 days old.

David has three brothers who all represented Yorkshire Colts – two of them playing for the North of England and later the Bradford and he played for the Rhinos U18s Academy side, winning the Grand Final alongside players such as Lee Smith and Scott Murrell.

He also toured New Zealand and Australia with the Great Britain U18s Rugby League side and scored four tries against Auckland in a warm up, two against New Zealand (including the winner), and then the winner against Australia to win the series for the first time ever.

After leaving Leeds at the end of the 2005-06 season David joined Wasps, who won the Premiership title against Leicester at Twickenham and the Heineken Cup during his time at the club. His first team chances at Wasps were limited and the following season he joined Sale Sharks and started in almost all of their games, before a knee injury set him back.

David signed for Jersey in the autumn of 2010 and was able to build his fitness and help them win National Two South with 18 tries. The following year he signed for Cornish Pirates when he again showed his eye for the tryline with 14 tries in 24 games.

His childhood hero was Jason Robinson. He supports Manchester United, who he actually played for as a 15 year old.
